Dublin Writer Publishes Fourth Sci-Fi Novel

  • Apr 4, 2025

Eloise Hamann, a Dublin resident and retired professor of mathematics, has published her fourth science fiction novel, “Not Alone on Earth.” Set in 2033, in a world that has failed to stop global warming, the novel is about efforts to create a livable community in a submarine large enough to be a small town, only to discover intelligent life may already exist deep in the ocean.

After more than two decades at San Jose State University, Hamann retired in 2007.

In 2014, she published her first novel, "Inhabited," a small-town cop thriller that she describes as Stephen King meets Garrison Keillor.

Changing direction, she published "Lost World," about an undersea civilization of human-like tetrapeds, in 2017, followed by "Lost Sea: Escaper from Lower World," in 2019.

"Not Alone on  Earth" is the third book in her "Ocean World" series. Hamann also edited a collection of dark poems by her son, Shannon, who died in a fall in 2004. That compilation, "Deathdoubledactyl," won the Transcontinental Poetry Award in 2011. In 2012, she published a novel by her son, "Brad Pitt Won't Leave Me Alone," a tragicomedy about a woman who believes the actor sends her messages in his movies. Hamann is also a frequent writer to The Independent.
