Eloise Hamann's Lost Sea, the second book in her fascinating undersea trilogy, is a fast-paced adventure where from the first page the characters must grapple with conditions that affect their survival and where their lives depend on how quickly and adeptly they can learn the rules of their new circumstances. The tale is gripping because, while the characters are very different from us and in a very unfamiliar place, they must struggle to deal with challenges that are both timely in our world and common for the human condition in general - greed, pollution, gender equality, being the other, irresponsible and dangerous leadership. The ending of the book suggests some new challenges that await as these characters continue to search for a safe and just place to call home.
